As Joe Nathan prepares to head to Minnesota for MRIs on his right elbow, the talk surrounding his tightness from yesterday has focused on relatively minor issues. The Star-Tribune explains:
Joe Nathan Elbow Speculation Centers On Scar Tissue
Nathan, 35, had surgery Oct. 20 to remove bone spurs and other loose particles from the elbow. He hopes and the team hopes that what he’s experiencing is the breaking up of scar tissue in the elbow.
“We’re going to get some pictures just for some piece of mind,” Nathan said.
Nathan said he would have taken a couple days off from throwing anyway, so he’ll get the elbow looked at, comparing this MRI exam with one that he had before undergoing surgery.
This, obviously, would be the ideal scenario for Nathan and the Twins; even a completely clean MRI would be worse, as it would leave no explanation for the discomfort Nathan was feeling.
If it is, in fact, scar tissue, Nathan would miss a marginal amount of regular season time, if any at all. It also serves as a reminder, however, that 35-year-old elbows don’t heal quite the same as 25-year-old elbows, and that complications may continue to arise over the course of the season.
