On Sunday, Barry Bonds remarked that he was proud of Mark McGwire for admitting to past steroid use. I’ll allow you to dissect that comment on your own. I’m more interested by something else he said:
Barry Bonds Hasn’t Been Informed That He Has Already Retired
↵↵The 45-year-old Bonds, back in the Bay Area for a reunion at AT&T Park of the Giants’ 2000 NL West champion team, says he doesn’t believe now is the right time to retire — though he also insists he’s not in shape to play right now if an interested club came calling.
↵↵Sir! ‘Scuse me! Your third Opening Day without a team has come and gone. You are 45 years old, and you insist (!) that you’re not in shape to play baseball. And that’s not even the issue: even though you proved yourself as a still-productive hitter, nobody would sign you.
↵He’s the only one who hasn’t yet realized that he’s already retired, apparently because he believes his own acknowledgment is the sole qualifier. This isn’t an egregious sin or anything, it’s just silly.
