2010 SB Nation NFL Mock Draft: Pick 56

The second round of the 2010 SB Nation NFL Mock Draft rolls along. We're having each SB Nation blogger make selections for their respective teams. Brandon, lead blogger of SB Nation's Green Bay Packers blog, Acme Packing Company, checks in to make the No. 56 overall selection in this year's mock. Take it away!

With the No. 56 overall pick in the 2010 SB Nation NFL Mock Draft, the Green Bay Packers have selected Dominique Franks, CB, Oklahoma.

Brandon says: There's a lot to like about Franks who's coming out early and foregoing his senior season. He's been an excellent starter over the past two seasons with the Sooners, and is a terrific athlete. He doesn't possess exceptional size (5'11", 194 lbs.) but he ran a 4.46 40-yard dash at the NFL combine. He might be a bit of a project since he didn't play much (any?) zone in college, and he may need to work on his fundamentals (i.e. tackling). But the Packers won't need him to step into the cornerback rotation immediately. He's more of a long-term project who can push CB Josh Bell off the roster now, and eventually replace CBs Al Harris and Charles Woodson. He reminds me of Auburn's CB Pat Lee, who the Packers drafted in the 2nd round back in 2008, who was a bit of a project himself. This might be the best situation Franks could hope for because they'll ask little of him at first and he can play alongside and learn from Harris and Woodson.

On the other hand, Franks is about my 4th choice in this spot, and it makes me wonder if the Packers might not be looking to trade up in the 2nd round. I had been hoping to draft an offensive lineman, but the two I was targeting (Jared Veldheer and Rodger Saffold) went shortly before. I had been hoping Kareem Jackson would continue his slide, but that wasn’t meant to be either.

Mocking Dan reacts: This is a tough draft for Green Bay. It's hard to imagine the team would get out of the first two rounds without an offensive tackle, but there was lacking value every time the Packers picked. Fortunately a player like Franks has a lot of upside and value.

He’s a bit of a liability in the run game, but his potential in the pass game was enough for Buffalo Rumblings.

It’s a high-potential pick for a Detroit defense that needs a solid pass rusher.
