While the Stanley Cup Playoffs start Wednesday night, Tuesday night is important for the 14 teams that didn't make the postseason. The results of the NHL Draft Lottery are being unveiled at the TSN studios tonight, as the Edmonton Oilers are hoping for the number one draft pick, thanks to their league worst record. The percentages for winning the lottery are as follows:
NHL Draft Lottery: Edmonton Hopes Ping-Pong Balls Land Their Way
30th place team - 25.0 percent
29th place team - 18.8 percent
28th place team - 14.2 percent
27th place team - 10.7 percent
26th place team - 8.1 percent
25th place team - 6.2 percent
24th place team - 4.7 percent
23rd place team - 3.6 percent
22nd place team - 2.7 percent
21st place team - 2.1 percent
20th place team - 1.5 percent
19th place team - 1.1 percent
18th place team - 0.8 percent
17th place team - 0.5 percent
While the 17th place team has a .5% chance of winning the lottery, that does not necessarily mean that they get the number one overall pick. The team that wins the lottery can only move up five spots, so that means that the 26th-30th place teams are the only ones with a chance at number one. The five teams that are looking for the top spot are Edmonton, Boston (from Toronto), Florida, Columbus and the New York Islanders.
Coverage starts at 8:00 PM Eastern on Versus in the United States and TSN in Canada. If you are slightly bored while waiting, you can play around with the Draft Lottery Simulator until the actual one happens.
