Charlie Manuel appeared on Sirius XM Radio on Wednesday and told hosts Jim Duquette and Kevin Kennedy that Jimmy Rollins’ calf injury has been deemed “between a Grade 2 and 1” calf strain.
Jimmy Rollins Placed On 15 Day DL With Calf Strain
"He's definitely going to be out some time," Manuel told Jim Duquette and Kevin Kennedy on Sirius XM radio. "How much, I don't know, but he's hurt pretty bad."
Manuel used the word "tear" when discussing Rollins', which is accurate in the sense that a Grade 2 strain involves some partial tearing of the calf muscle. A rough recovery time is three-to-six weeks, although each case is different.
The Phillies followed with a press release minutes later officially announcing that Rollins has been placed on the 15 day disabled list.
Shortstop Jimmy Rollins has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a right calf strain, Senior Vice President & General Manager Ruben Amaro Jr. announced today. To take his spot on the 25-man roster, infielder Wilson Valdez had his contract selected from triple-A Lehigh Valley.
An MRI taken yesterday at the Rothman Institute at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital revealed a Grade 1/Grade 2 strain of the right calf. Rollins suffered the injury during pre-game warm-ups moments before Monday’s game against the Washington Nationals. The DL stint is retroactive to April 13.We believe it to be a mild to moderate strain and we’re hopeful it will be a two-to-four week recovery,” said Amaro. “As in all of our injuries, precautions will be taken so that Jimmy is 100% when he returns to the field.”
Juan Castro will replace Rollins at shortstop and is expected to hit 8th, while Shane Victorino will take over lead-off duties while Rollins is out. Rollins had started hot for the 6-1 Phillies, hitting .391 and taking a surprising seven walks.
