Inside-the-park home runs are an electrifying event on their own, but watching one from a plodder takes things to a whole other level. And so, when Aubrey Huff stepped in against Charlie Morton in the bottom of the second inning Wednesday afternoon, an inside-the-parker was the last thing on anybody’s mind. Huff had yet to go deep as a Giant. He didn’t steal a base all last season. He’s a first baseman who weighs in at 234 pounds. Aubrey Huff is known more for his mouth than for his legs, and fans would’ve been happy to just get a double.

↵Huff got a hold of a pitch, though, and that’s where the wackiness began. He lifted a deep fly to right center that took forever to come down, and as soon as the ball took a funny carom off the angled wall, that was it. Game over. Right fielder Garrett Jones was left well out of position, and by the time CF Andrew McCutchen made it over, Huff was already rounding third base. Not only did he pick up an inside-the-park home run - he did so without so much as a throw to the plate.
