2010 SB Nation NFL Mock Draft: Pick 63

The second round of the 2010 SB Nation NFL Mock Draft is winding down. We're having each SB Nation blogger make selections for their respective teams. BigBlueShoe, lead blogger at SB Nation's Indianapolis Colts blog, Stampede Blue, checks in to make the No. 63 overall selection in this year's mock. Take it away!

BBS says: I wish I could say I was hoping for Tebow, but I wasn't. Let Gonzo and his blonde-bearded pillagers in Minnesota deal with that. For me, the choice in Round Two was between Arthur Jones, DT out of Syracuse, and Corey Wootton from Northwestern. This was a tough call, and making it tougher was the versatility that Wootton brings to the field. This type of versatility is exactly what the Colts need, especially after they granted long-time defensive end Raheem Brock his release this off-season. With Wootton, I felt that his ability to play both DE and DT would benefit the Colts, allowing them to utilize his 6'7, 277 pound frame to create mis-matches on the line. However, Wootton's knock is his lack of edge speed, and for a DE in a Tampa-2 defense, edge speed is important. When it is all said and done, it came down to fit. Which player fits this team? For me, the answer was Arthur Jones, but not by much.

At 6'3, 301 pounds, Jones is ideally suited (physically) to play in the Tampa-2 defense that the Colts use. Now, I realize that picking Jones seems a bit odd given that the Colts used a second round pick last year on a DT from USC named Fili Moala. I've met Fili. I've interviewed him. I've watched him play. I am NOT sold on Fili Moala as a DT who can create pressure on the QB from the interior of the Colts d-line. At least with Jones there is the potential to develop him into an interior pass rusher and o-line disruptor. He also just seems tougher and more focused than Moala, who looked totally lost on the football field last season.

Jones' strengths are his burst off the line and his quickness. He doesn't have a solid set of pass rushing moves, but that is where defensive line coach John Teerlinck comes in. If anyone can develop Jones as an interior rusher, it's him. Jones is also a very good and violent tackler. He sheds blockers well, and his competitiveness really sets him apart from other players. He can also play "anchor" tackle, utilizing his size and strength. The only red flag with Jones is a history of injury, but one thing I liked reading in his scouting report was he played through injuries at Syracuse and still produced. He's a tough guy. One needs that to win in the trenches in this league.

With Jones on the roster, the Colts could then develop Mitch King or Eric Foster to possibly replace Raheem Brock as the utility d-lineman. Jones could then compete with Dan Muir or Mookie Johnson, both of which were only offered one-year tenders this off-season. The DT position is vital in a Tampa-2, and with an under-the-radar player like Arthur Jones (ranked 51st overall by MtD) sitting there at pick #63, taking him adds tremendous value to a Colts defense that has turned the corner in recent years.

Mocking Dan reacts: This early for a defensive tackle is a potential risk. You'd basically be giving up on Moala after a season, even though he might fit best as a 3-4 end. I also really like the potential of Muir, even though he wasn't given a longer-term contract. But BBS is right in that Jones would fit the scheme pretty well and has some versatility.
