SB Nation NFL Mock Draft: Pick 64

The 2010 SB Nation NFL Mock Draft comes to a close. We've had each SB Nation blogger make selections for their respective teams. Dave Cariello, lead blogger at SB Nation's New Orleans Saints blog, Canal Street Chronicles, checks in to make the No. 64 overall selection in this year's mock. Finish this sucker off!

With the No. 64 overall pick in the 2010 SB Nation NFL Mock Draft, the New Orleans Saints have selected Toby Gerhart, RB, Stanford

Dave says: The Saints probably ought to stick with selecting defensive players this early in the draft but Toby Gerhart is just too good to pass up at this position. Sean Payton nearly traded up last year to try and get Beanie Wells but never pulled the trigger and wound up sticking with the backs they had "in the building." Selecting the 6'0", 231 lbs. former Cardinal here gives the team a chance to get that straight ahead, pile-moving runner to fill the void left by Deuce McAllister two years ago and Mike Bell more recently.

Having a solid back like Gerhart to carry the heavy load on the ground would give Payton just another weapon in his imaginative offense, leaving Reggie Bush and Pierre Thomas free to be special and Drew Brees so much more dangerous.

Mocking Dan reacts: First things first. Thanks to every SB Nation NFL site for participating in this again. We only had to make a couple of picks, so kudos to each and every lead guy on the sites. And a humongous thanks to Brian Galliford for assisting. He did a lot of back-end organization, and really helped knock this out of the park. Anytime this blog can associate itself with Brian, it's a good thing.

Now, onto the pick. This may be a little early for a team to draft a third running back, but I love it. Everyone knows a power runner is the last piece the Saints offense needs to retain its status as a juggernaut. The draft is deep on defensive players so more additions could be added later. Gerhart is the premier big back in the draft and would give the Saints a good inside running presence.

Mocking the Draft’s Top 5 remaining prospects: 1 - Rob Gronkowski/TE/Arizona, 2 - Brandon Spikes/LB/Florida, 3 - Aaron Hernandez, TE, Florida, 4 - Brandon LaFell/WR/LSU. 5 - Mike Johnson/G/Alabama
Sound off, SB Nation! What say you of the Saints’ selection of Gerhart? Please be sure to check out Canal Street Chronicles for all of your Saints needs.

He’s a bit of a liability in the run game, but his potential in the pass game was enough for Buffalo Rumblings.
