The Astros finally won on Thursday afternoon, lifting their record from a dismal 0-8 to a woeful 1-8. Being 1-8 doesn’t put the Astros in good position to do anything positive, but it does tie them with the Orioles, meaning, company! Says Evan Hochschild at The Crawfish Boxes:
Astros Fans Are Pleased, But Realistic After Team Finally Wins One
I would love to play up this game as a season changer or something of that nature. It very well could prove to be just that, but in the short term, it removes our team from the butt of a lot of jokes. 1-8 isn’t pretty, not at all. But at least we’re no longer that team without a win; we go to being just another bad baseball team. That’s fine. Therein lies room for improvement, for overcoming low expectations and achieving whatever goals are realistic for this team to reach.
The Astros are almost certainly going to finish as one of the worst teams in baseball, but as long as they keep from being exceptionally terrible, they may be able to blend in a little bit and spare everyone a little heartache. While it’s never fun to be one of the losers, it’s even worse to be their king, so in that regard, this is progress.
