Jose Guillen is one of the more unique characters in the American League. His claim to fame is that he has a way of making people dislike him, and unlike, say, Milton Bradley, those people tend to be his teammates and employers, as opposed to the media and fans. For example, in 2004, in a pennant race, the Angels basically kicked him off the team with two weeks left in the season, despite the fact that Guillen was having one of his best years. You have to work to end up in ten organizations, after all.
Jose Guillen Reveals That He ‘Almost Died’ From Blood Clots Last Fall
↵Guillen’s saving grace in recent years has been that he really hasn’t been good enough to even be worth any outrage and he was set to finish out the final year of a horrific three-year $36 million dollar contract in Kansas City in relative obscurity.
↵Then the KC Star’s Bob Dutton broke this story on Thursday afternoon, revealing that Guillen spent twenty days in a Kansas City hospital due to blood clots in his legs.
↵↵“I almost died last year from blood clots in my legs,” he said. “Both of my legs. I had to stay in St. Luke’s Hospital in Kansas City for 20 days (in the offseason) just lying in bed.
↵“My legs were so big, so swollen up. They were purple. I couldn’t even walk on them. I couldn’t feel my legs. That was right after my ankle surgery and the surgery on my lower back.

↵“The doctor started talking about dying,” he said. “I didn’t even know what a blood clot was. It was so bad that I couldn’t feel my legs. I remember going through an airport and having to use a wheelchair. I could not even walk.
