The Toronto Maple Leafs have signed goaltender Jonas Gustavsson to a two-year contract extension. Although the contract has yet to be signed, the Swede will earn an average of $1.35 million each season. SB Nation's Maple Leafs blog, Pension Plan Puppets, sees it as a positive in numerous ways.
Toronto Maple Leafs Sign Jonas Gustavsson To Two-Year, $2.7 Million Contract
This deal is a boon to the Toronto Maple Leafs' cap situation and a testament to both Brian Burke's negotiating skills and Jonas Gustavsson's desire to be a Maple Leaf. He surely appreciated the Leafs' acquisition of Francois Allaire and Jean-Sebastien Giguere as supports to ensure that he reaches his potential. He will have one more year of apprenticeship with Giguere and hopefully after a healthy season the Leafs will be able to decide if he is the goaltender of the future.
Gustavsson was recently chosen as Toronto’s nominee for the Bill Masterton Trophy, recognizing perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey. The 26-year-old played 41 games this year, achieving a 16-14-9 record, 2.82 goals against average and .904 save percentage.
