Coyotes 4, Red Wings 2: Phoenix Regains Home Ice Advantage, Take 2-1 Series Lead

Detroit, MI (Sports Network) - Radim Vrbata and Petr Prucha each posted a goal and one assist, as Phoenix doubled up Detroit, 4-2, in Game 3 of a Western Conference quarterfinal from Joe Louis Arena.

Sami Lepisto and Wojtek Wolski also lit the lamp for the Coyotes, who took control of the series after dropping a 7-4 decision at home on Friday.

Ilya Bryzgalov stopped 29-of-31 shots for the win.

Valtteri Filppula and Johan Franzen scored for the Red Wings, who couldn't take advantage of home ice and failed to net a goal in the late stages of regulation despite back-to-back Coyotes penalties.

Jimmy Howard allowed all four goals on 33 shots in the loss.

Phoenix moved ahead, 3-1, at the 8:16 mark of the third period, as Vrbata slid down the left side and used a touch pass ahead to Prucha, who cut into the slot and pushed a shot by a sliding Howard.

Detroit countered at 9:59 for a one-goal game. Henrik Zetterberg -- who notched a hat trick in the Wings' Game 2 victory -- gained control behind the Coyotes' net and slipped a pass to Todd Bertuzzi, whose backhand feed into the slot found Franzen for a short-side shot that beat Bryzgalov under the crossbar.

Vrbata provided a counter-punch for the visitors when his uncontested wrister from the left circle hit the net at 11:38.

An early whistle negated a potential Bertuzzi short-side score with 3:02 to play in regulation, then the Wings pulled Howard for an extra skater just before the two-minute mark.

Phoenix controlled the puck and almost hit the empty net twice but got into trouble when defenseman Adrian Aucoin was called for delay-of-game with 28.1 to go and Ed Jovanovski was whistled for roughing with six seconds to play.

Bryzgalov, though, was strong to get a pad on a Tomas Holmstrom deflection through a screen in the final five ticks to preserve the victory.

Lepisto's one-timer off the rebound of a Martin Hanzal shot at the 29-second mark put the Coyotes on the board, then the Red Wings responded on a power play at 14:42 on Filppula's short-side shot.

A second period which saw numerous rallies and rushes by both clubs did not see a goal scored until Wolski backhanded a shot past Howard with 32 seconds remaining.

This was the first road playoff win for Phoenix since taking Game 2 of a Western Conference semifinal series at San Jose by a 3-1 score on April 20, 2002...Coyotes captain Shane Doan suffered an upper-body injury late in the first period and did not return...Detroit has dropped its last two home postseason tilts, the last one being Game 7 of the 2009 Stanley Cup Finals to Pittsburgh...Hanzal and Matthew Lombardi each picked up two helpers for the Coyotes...Zetterberg finished with two assists for the Red Wings.
