2010 SB Nation NFL Mock Draft: Round 1, Pick 30

The 2010 SB Nation NFL Mock Draft rolls on, with each SB Nation blogger making selections for their respective teams. Gonzo, lead blogger at SB Nation's Minnesota Vikings blog, Daily Norseman, checks in to make the No. 30 overall selection in this year's mock. Take it away, sir!

With the No. 30 overall pick in the 2010 SB Nation NFL Mock Draft, the Minnesota Vikings have selected Devin McCourty, CB, Rutgers.

Gonzo says: There was a part of me that really, really wanted to pull the trigger on Tim Tebow here, but I'm not sure if my inbox could have handled the influx of mail. . .both good and bad. But the first is still, in my mind, too early for Tebow, which allows us to take advantage of the gift of Devin McCourty falling to us at No. 30. McCourty is rising up the draft boards, and according to some is the second-best corner in this year's draft behind Joe Haden. McCourty is a bit in the mold of current Viking Antoine Winfield, as he's more than willing to throw his body around in the running game despite being a bit undersized. While he has his struggles in man coverage, he's shown himself to have a very good concept of where to line himself up in zones, which makes him a good fit for Minnesota's Cover 2 scheme. With the injury that Cedric Griffin suffered at the end of the NFC Championship Game, McCourty would have a chance to contribute immediately as a nickel guy at the very least, and possibly as a starter if he could beat out Asher Allen and/or Benny Sapp for the spot. Need and ability have truly met for the Vikings with this selection.

Mocking Dan reacts: This certainly is too early for Tebow, so kudos for practicing restraint. I may not have him ranked highly, but I love the pick of McCourty. He’s a talented physical cornerback who is a perfect scheme fit.

My feeling is that certain playoff teams should fill needs, which McCourty would do. McCourty wouldn’t have to wait behind Allen or Sapp. He’s already better than both and getting better.

Mocking the Draft’s Top 5 remaining prospects: 1 - Everson Griffen/DE/USC, 2 - Charles Brown/OT/USC, 3 - Golden Tate/WR/Notre Dame, 4 - Bruce Campbell/OT/Maryland, 5 - Jonathan Dwyer/RB/Georgia Tech

Sound off, SB Nation! What say you of Minnesota's selection of Devin McCourty? Please be sure to check out Daily Norseman for all of your Vikings needs.

He’s a bit of a liability in the run game, but his potential in the pass game was enough for Buffalo Rumblings.
