SB Nation’s Cowboys community, Blogging the Boys, has a wonderful piece on the release of LT Flozell Adams and S Ken Hamlin. There are quite a few good points made -- here a few of them..
What Does The Release Of Flozell Adams And Ken Hamlin Mean For The Cowboys Future?
On the first count, this is most likely Jerry allowing Ken Hamlin and Flozell Adams ample time to catch on with new teams before those teams fill needs through the draft. Many things are said about Jerry Jones, but one thing is definitely true, he really does care about his players and forms emotional bonds with them.
Without knowing the circumstances, it appears Jerry Jones did each player a favor by releasing them before the draft. Now they’ve got time to find another team before April 22nd.
Don’t believe the hype when people say the Cowboys now have to draft a LT in the first-round. The Cowboys almost assuredly believe that Doug Free is their starting LT of the future.
My next question, after seeing Adams released, was if that meant a left tackle is coming in the NFL draft. Apparently not, according to BTB, and their reasoning makes sense. At the very least, Free has to be given a shot to see if he can handle the job.
But, they have more options at finding another safety than they would looking for a LT. There are RFA’s they could go after, they could work a trade, or they could get one in the draft. Safeties are a much more available commodity on the market than tackles. Also, the draft is full of safeties that could go in the late-first round or second round with the real potential to step in and start. The Cowboys have options here.
Can’t argue there. This is expected to be a safety heavy draft so Hamlin’s release may not be too big of a deal.
