Everyone bemoaning the three-day format of this year’s selection process may soon have another opinion. That is because this year’s NFL Draft could feature a flurry of trade activity.
The combination of the draft being a three-day event, no salary cap in 2010 and general depth of talent could cause teams to become fluid.
There have already been 63 picks in this year’s draft involved in trades. Three of those picks came in the first round. Last year, seven first-round picks were involved in trades.
We’ve discussed plenty about Jacksonville wanting to move down from pick No. 10 in the first round to obtain more picks. There has also been speculation that Kansas City is trying to move down from pick No. 5.
But that’s just the beginning of it.
In this year’s NFL Draft, expect plenty of fluidity
With St. Louis holding the first pick in each round, the
should hear plenty of phone calls from teams wanting to move up. You saw it last year when the
moved up to take
at the top of round three.
“Anybody that comes up here, we’re open for more picks,” Rams G.M. Billy Devaney told reporters recently. “Nobody’s going to say, ‘Hell no, we don’t want more picks. We’re staying where we are.’ ”
No team has more draft picks (12) and likes to move around more than New England. With four of the first 53 picks, expect the
to shake things up at some point.
Seattle and San Francisco are in different stages of a rebuild and both have two first-round picks. It wouldn’t be a surprise if both teams move out of their second first-round pick (14 for Seattle and 17 for S.F.) to add additional picks.
The team that could be looking to make that trade is Philadelphia. The
have 10 picks in the draft, including two in the second and third rounds.
“We think we have a lot of ammunition, and if the opportunity presents itself we’ll go there,” general manager Howie Roseman said about trading.
Another team that could be moving up is Baltimore. The
are stuck behind Philadelphia and New England. With the Ravens needing secondary and pass rush help, they may want to move ahead of those two teams. But with only five picks in the draft, Baltimore would have to be creative.
Then there are players who could tip the balance of the draft. We’ve seen
,
and others shake up the draft process of late.
With players like
,
,
and maybe
being on the trade block, there could be a lot more fluidity in the draft.
