It’s not very difficult to steal a base on Victor Martinez. Coming into tonight’s game against the Texas Rangers, opposing base runners were 22-of-23 on stolen base attempts against the Red Sox with Martinez behind the plate. So, in most cases, there’s very little Martinez can do to prevent such stolen bases just by himself. Put knuckleballer Tim Wakefield on the mound, and you’re basically giving up a double for every single or walk.

↵In all, that makes for nine stolen bases in just 5 1/3 innings, which ties a Red Sox record for most SB allowed in a single game. Someone get Varitek in there. Or go looking for Doug Mirabelli.
