Reds Grant Astros Reprieve From Mockery, Hire Joe Morgan

Every year, it seems the internet’s baseball community picks a new punchline. The choice for 2010 - understandably - has been the Houston Astros, whose bizarre and unproductive offseason provoked a relentless wave of criticism and snark that has endured into April. The Astros, though, are finally being given a break, as rival Cincinnati has bested this year’s punchline by hiring an old one.

↵↵The Reds have called a news conference for Wednesday afternoon to announce that Hall of Famer Joe Morgan has joined the club as a special advisor to baseball operations.

↵↵Now, it’s important to understand that we don’t know what Morgan’s responsibilities will be. Odds are he could actually do a lot of good for the organization, a legend who could serve as public face or ambassador. Alternatively, he may not have any responsibilities at all, and the job may be strictly ceremonial. The Reds presumably aren’t hiring Joe Morgan for his skills in analysis.

↵But at the same time, the Cincinnati Reds’ front office now employs both Joe Morgan and Bill Bavasi. Regardless of actual merit, this is a gold deposit the internet will thoroughly mine. Congratulations, Houston: you’re back out of the spotlight.

↵By the way, there’s not yet any word on how this will impact Morgan’s broadcasting duties with ESPN. As such, it’s possible that the aim of the Fire Joe Morgan crew may be achieved by getting Joe Morgan hired.
