Darnell McDonald was the Orioles’ number-one draft pick ... in 1997. Since then, he has toiled away, mostly in the minors, playing in just 68 MLB games, with his career-best being the 47 times he played with the Reds in 2009. Clearly, he has been using the previous 13 years of professional baseball experience to hone his craft, waiting for the pefect opportunity to unleash his greatness.
Darnell McDonald: The Greatest Baseball Player Ever?
↵This week, the Red Sox gave him that opportunity.
↵Because of a pair of injuries in the outfield, Boston was forced to call-up McDonald from Pawtucket. Since he’s arrived in Fenway, no one’s been able to get him out.
↵In his debut with the Sox, on Tuesday night, McDonald hit a pinch-hit, game-tying two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth. Then, just for good measure, he won the game in the bottom of the ninth with a run-scoring single. Wednesday night, McDonald continued to make his case for Cooperstown with another home run. Including his two walks tonight, McDonald has not been retired yet. His numbers: 1.000 BA, 2 HR, 1.000 OBP, 4.000 OPS.
↵It should be noted that he is the first player to homer in his first two games with the Red Sox since Sam Horn did the same, in July of 1987. So if this “Greatest Baseball Player Ever” thing doesn’t work out (as if), he’ll at least have the fallback of being the namesake for a fan’s message board.
