San Diego, CA (Sports Network) - Mat Latos threw seven strong innings to help San Diego, which had just one hit, take a 1-0 win over San Francisco in the second of a three-game set.
Jonathan Sanchez And Giants One-Hit Padres, Lose
Latos (1-1) gave up just four hits with a walk and two strikeouts, while Mike Adams and Heath Bell each threw a scoreless inning for the Padres, who have won five straight.
Chase Headley had the lone hit for San Diego and scored the team's only run on a sacrifice fly from Scott Hairston.
Jonathan Sanchez (1-1) was the hard-luck loser after going seven innings and giving up just one run on one hit with three walks and 10 strikeouts for the Giants, who have dropped their last three games -- all by one run. Pablo Sandoval had two hits and walked once in the loss.
San Diego threatened in the second as the team loaded the bases, but it was with two outs, and Latos struck out to end the frame.
San Francisco got a leadoff double from Eli Whiteside in the third, but he was tagged out at third on Sanchez's sacrifice bunt attempt. Eugenio Velez then hit a single, but Edgar Renteria grounded into a double play to end the frame.
The Padres got on the board in the fourth. Headley led off with a single, stole second then moved to third on a Kyle Blanks foul out. Hairston then hit a fly ball to right that allowed Headley to score for a 1-0 lead.
After a leadoff single from Sandoval in the fourth, Matos retired the next 12 batters he faced before leaving the game after the seventh inning.
Mike Adams took over on the mound to start the eighth and gave up a leadoff triple to Nate Schierholtz. However, Adams got Whiteside to ground out to third, Bengie Molina to pop out to first and Velez to look at strike three to end the inning with the lead intact.
Bell took the mound in the ninth to close the game and got Renteria to fly out to start the frame but then walked Sandoval. Aubrey Huff followed with a single to center to put men on the corners. Juan Uribe, though, flied out to shallow right, keeping Andres Torres -- running for Sandoval -- on third, and John Bowker struck out to end the game.
San Diego second baseman David Eckstein, who hit a game-winning homer in the 10th inning in Monday's win, went 0-for-3 but did not strike out and has now gone 50 plate appearances this season without a strikeout. No other major leaguer has as many at-bats without a strikeout...In his last start, Sanchez went eight innings and gave up just three hits with three walks and a career- high tying 11 strikeouts in a win over the Pirates...The Giants have committed no errors in the last six games and have just six errors on the season, best in the National League...In the finale on Wednesday, Todd Wellemeyer will take the mound for San Francisco and be opposed by Jon Garland...Bell notched his fourth save of the season.
