Fantasy Baseball: Wednesday’s Roto Roundup

Here are some thoughts after reviewing Wednesday’s boxscores:

Maybe Roy Halladay will win 20 games in the National League after all. Charlie Manuel left Halladay in for the complete game shutout in a 2-0 win over the Braves. Halladay gave up 5 hits, a walk and struck out 7 to lower his ERA to 0.82.

Late word out of Washington is that the Nationals are going to put starting pitcher Jason Marquis on the DL for.....for....getting rocked in his last outing. Not sure what the injury is, but I am sure the Nats medical staff can come up with something appropriate.

Phillies leadoff hitter Shane Victorino is hitting .210-.258-.387 on the season. Couldn’t happen to a better guy.

After seeing Nate McLouth’s slash line of .147-.318-.235 is anyone giving the Pirates credit for seeing that his 2008 season was a fluke, and dealing him to the Braves?

Twins starter Francisco Liriano shutout the Indians for 8 innings on Wednesday, holding them to 6 hits, 2 walks, and striking out 6. Liriano is 2-0 with a 1.29 ERA.

Rays starter Wade Davis held the White Sox to 2 hits in 6 innings while walking 3 and striking out 6. The Yankees may have their hands full with the Rays in 2010, instead of the Red Sox.

Red Sox starter Josh Beckett followed up bad outings by John Lackey and Tim Wakefield with one of his own. He gave up 7 runs, 6 earned, in 7 innings while allowing 6 hits and 5 walks. Nothing is going right for the Red Sox. Well, they did beat the Rangers in 12 innings, so that’s a start. Do you think the Red Sox are regretting allowing Jason Bay to leave via free agency during the offseason?

The Dodgers scored in every inning but the 4th on Wednesday as they beat the Reds 14-6. Rafael Furcal, Matt Kemp, Andre Ethier and Manny Ramirez, 1-4 in the Dodgers lineup, combined to go 10-17, with 5 walks, 9 runs scored and 10 RBI.

Many fantasy owners stayed away from Manny Ramirez this season due to his poor second half last season. I felt his poor performance was a result of a hand injury, while others felt it was due to him coming off steroids. Well, Manny is making his naysayers look bad as he is hitting .421-.510-.684 on the season. Just Manny being Manny.

After manager Lou Piniella announced that starter Carlos Zambrano was moving to the bullpen when Ted Lilly returns from the DL this weekend, Carlos Silva went out and made him look good. Silva gave up one run on 2 hits and 2 walks in his 6 innings of work. He is now 2-0 with an ERA below 1.00. Is he for real??

Cubs outfielder Alfonso Soriano went 3-4 with a HR and 3 RBI on Wednesday. So far, he appears to be getting comfortable with the 6th spot in the Cubs lineup as he is hitting .327-.353-.612.

Another Cub hitting well this season is catcher Geovany Soto. Soto was 2-2 with a run scored, an RBI and 3 walks. On the season, Soto is hitting .333-.524-.467 with a K/BB rate of 8/12.

Rockies leadoff hitter Carlos Gonzalez went 4-5 with a SB in the Rockies loss to the Nationals on Wednesday. CarGo is hitting .383 on the season, but has yet to take a walk. Not a good quality for a leadoff hitter.
