MLB.tv Is Coming To The PlayStation 3

When Major League Baseball first introduced MLB.tv several years ago, it changed everything for me as an out-of-market baseball fan. All of a sudden, rather than relying on national broadcasts, I could watch my favorite team nearly every single day.

↵For all of its upside, though - I remained a loyal customer through 2009 - MLB.tv did come with its drawbacks, most notably that I was watching on a laptop and it chewed up my memory. There were ways to export the video to a television, of course, but none of them did much for me, and even then you’d still be dealing with tricky MLB.tv/browser/computer interactions.

↵Now, one promising solution has been announced: MLB Advanced Media and Sony have arrived at an agreement that will bring MLB.tv to the PS3. The service - which costs the same as MLB.tv on the computer (and is free for current subscribers), a price a good deal lower than Extra Innings - allows the user to view any available game in hi-def on the television, with options to choose the broadcast. Also included are DVR capabilities and game archives, among a number of other features.

↵It’s not a perfect service, and it obviously requires one to own a PS3 in order to use it. But given a choice between watching a game on a computer and watching it on a TV, I take the TV every time.
