Major League Baseball Alters Its All-Star Game. Again.

Never one to let a relatively meaningless game lie, Major League Baseball was hard at work on Wednesday, making more changes to the All-Star Game. Unfortunately, one detail will remain untouched: the Midsummer Classic will still decide home-field advantage in the World Series. Anyways, on to the new wrinkles:

  • ↵↵The DH will be used every year, and not just in A.L. stadiums. This will prevent pitchers from having to bat and injuring themselves, presumably (the N.L. manager will pick his starting DH).
  • ↵Starting pitchers who pitch the Sunday immediately before Tuesday’s All-Star Game will not be allowed to pitch in the exhibition, and will be replaced on the roster. Another move to protect the pitchers, sure, but it should also save the team’s managers the fear of hurting someone else’s ace by throwing him too much.
  • ↵More All-Stars: the rosters are expanded from 33 to 34 players (21 position players and 13 pitchers).
  • ↵This is when things get somewhat Little League-ish: one position player who leaves the game will be permitted to reenter the game, but only there is an injury to the last players available.

↵↵And remember: this is how baseball decides who gets home field advantage for the World Series.
