Who ever thought that the Sports Emmys could garner three separate posts? First, we did a recap of the winners, thinking it was a "hey, here's something sports related that won't cause too much controversy." Then came the controversy.↵Littmann posted the story about Dick Ebersol making an ESPN-TMZ joke while on stage with Jerry Jones that had the Worldwide Leaders in a tizzy.↵Now, after word that a potential feud with the brass at NBC has started, Bill Simmons got into the mix with a salvo launched at HBO and exec Ross Greenburg (pictured).↵

↵↵⇥Greenburg on ESPN docs: “They’ll do what they’ll do. We’re always going to feel like we own this category.” Yes, ages 55-90. You still do.↵↵Burn. Now, there’s no denying the fact that ESPN’s 30 for 30 series is, by all critical accounts, fantastic. And man, there sure are a lot of them, with way more than half to go. Simmons, who is an executive producer of the series, surely has a stake in the success, both in the ratings and through the always important filling up of trophy cases.↵↵As John Ourand of SBJ pointed out, Simmons didn’t stop with the “old people like HBO” dig.↵
↵↵⇥Tweet from @sportsguy33 on HBO’s best documentary Emmy win: “[Ross Greenburg’s] the chairman of the Sports Emmys.” Them’s fightin’ words.↵↵This is all in response to Greenburg’s comments to Michael Hiestand of USA Today that included an analogy of the HBO documentaries to Michelangelo’s David. So you can see how someone like Simmons might be a little defensive of the progressive product ESPN is producing.↵↵Who knew the Sports Emmys could create such public acrimony? I joked that they should rename the awards after Bob Costas who wins every year, but maybe they should name it the Sports Media Cat Fight, because that’s the most interesting news. Now if I can only get Ernie Johnson to admit he wants to punch Costas in the face…↵
