Denver, CO (Sports Network) - Carlos Gonzalez went 3-for-5 with five RBI, and Colorado crushed Arizona, 12-1, in the second installment of a three-game set.
Ubaldo Jimenez Sets Himself A Record As Rockies Cruise Past Diamondbacks
Ubaldo Jimenez (5-0) remained perfect on the young season, extending his scoreless streak to 22 1/3 innings after six near-spotless frames. The Rockies ace, who two starts prior no-hit the Atlanta Braves, allowed just two hits and two walks while fanning six, lowering his earned-run average to 0.79.
Troy Tulowitzki went 3-for-3 with three runs scored and an RBI, while Eric Young Jr. and Miguel Olivo each drove in a pair for Colorado, which lost the opener of the series, 5-3.
In just 2 1/3 innings, Edwin Jackson (1-2) was touched for 10 runs on 11 hits and two walks in a forgettable start for Arizona. Justin Upton drove in the lone run in the loss, the club's third in the past seven games.
Colorado jumped all over Jackson early, as Gonzalez’s two-out, two-run double in the first was followed by Olivo’s RBI two-bagger.
Dexter Fowler and Todd Helton added run-scoring singles in the second, and Gonzalez made it 7-0 with a two-run triple later in the inning.
Young, recently called up to replace the injured Brad Hawpe, scored a pair with a single to center in the third, causing Arizona to pull the plug on Jackson. Blaine Boyer entered and promptly walked three consecutive batters, the last a five-pitch free pass to Tulowitzki that forced in a run.
Gonzalez’s fielder’s choice scored Fowler to cap another four-run inning.
Miguel Olivo tacked on a sacrifice fly in the fifth.
Colorado saved Jimenez's arm after the right-hander allowed just four baserunners through six innings. In the eighth, Upton singled off Juan Rincon to score Cole Gillespie and spoil the shutout.
Before the game, the Rockies placed pitchers Jorge De La Rosa (finger) and Jason Hammel (groin) on the 15-day disabled list, recalled catcher Paul Phillips, and pitchers Jhoulys Chacin and Juan Rincon from Triple-A Colorado Springs and optioned catcher Chris Iannetta to Colorado Springs...Jimenez went 2-1 with a 2.73 ERA in four starts versus Arizona last year...Jackson entered the game 0-1 with a 13.81 ERA in four career starts against Colorado...The Rockies had 16 hits, to five for Arizona.
