There is a time and place for everything. The appropriate place to protest the new Arizona immigration bill would be within shouting distance of a government building in Phoenix, and I would suggest doing so while important law makers are inside.
Wrigley Field Protest Surprisingly Not Directed At Alfonso Soriano
↵The appropriate time and place to protest the new Arizona immigration bill is NOT just outside Wrigley Field, right before the Cubs host Arizona’s Diamondbacks. Unfortunately, that’s exactly what hundreds of Chicago-ites, ummm Chicagoans? Chicago natives planned for Thursday’s game.
↵↵As of Thursday morning, 790 people said they planned to attend a protest outside of Wrigley Field as the Chicago Cubs take on the Arizona Diamondbacks Thursday afternoon...The demonstrators plan on bringing posters and marching, as well as handing out fliers to baseball fans that detail their opposition to the new law, according to the page. The group also asks anyone attending the game to wave posters condemning the law.
↵↵As we pointed out a few days ago, fans are upset at the Diamondbacks because one of their owners has contributed to the Republican party in the past, and that apparently makes him responsible for every move the party makes, as well as the logical target for any complaints. The Diamondbacks tried, desperately, to remove themselves from the whole fiasco.
↵↵The team also explained that Kendrick is one of nearly 75 owners of the D-backs and none of his, nor do the other owners’, personal contributions reflect organizational preferences. The D-backs have never supported (Senate) Bill 1070, nor has the team ever taken a political stance or position on any legislation.
↵↵Maybe I’m severely underestimating Justin Upton’s legislative influence, but I just don’t think that protesting the D-backs is going to have any effect on the new bill. It seems like everyone in Chicago, or anywhere else for that matter, who takes their frustration out on the Diamondbacks, simply sees the Diamondbacks team bus and say to themselves, “Arizona...now where have I seen that name recently? O that’s right!”
