April 18 is a date Dan Boyle and the San Jose Sharks would like to forget; the day the defenseman unknowingly shot an overtime winner into his net. Down 2-1 in the opening-round series with the Colorado Avalanche at that point, it was a play which stood on its own from the Sharks’ previous postseason hard times. Or was it?
Was Dan Boyle’s Own-Goal A Disguised Blessing For San Jose?
↵Boyle, who won a Stanley Cup with Tampa Bay in 2004, knew he’d have to leave it all on the ice to get past that awful moment. With the help of his teammates, he and the Sharks have won four games in a row since, eliminating the Avalanche and gaining a 1-0 lead over the Detroit Red Wings in the Conference Semifinals. Their top defenseman has responded as much as anyone with seven points in those contests.
↵The own-goal has seemingly served as an inspiration for San Jose to say ‘enough is enough, let’s play our best hockey and go out on our own terms’. Therein lies the problem because the Sharks don’t look ready to head home empty-handed this year. Misfortune has given them the kick in the rear end that they needed. Is this, dare I say, the season of the San Jose Sharks?
