When we last left Dez Bryant, we’d found out that it was the Dolphins that asked him the most invasive interview question of all time:
The Story Of Dez Bryant’s Dolphins Interview Takes Another Bizarre Turn
↵↵You’re sitting down for a job interview. Everything seems to be going pretty well. You’re going over your references and past experiences, explaining why you’d be a good fit for the position. You even crack a witty remark or two. And then your interviewer hits you with this gem: “Is your mom a prostitute?”
↵↵In the comments for that article, one reader asked, “What context could possibly make that question acceptable?” Well, glad you asked! From Sports Illustrated’s James Trotter comes the context:
↵↵“My dad was a pimp.”
↵“What did your mom do [for a living]?”
↵“She worked for my dad.”
↵↵Oh. So... Well, okay. Hmm. Interesting.
↵She... Did she do the pimp’s taxes? Was she his pimpin’ personal assistant? Did she manage his pimp wardrobe? Wash his Cutlass Supreme?
↵
↵
↵Admit it: the logical follow-up question when you hear of a woman that “worked for my dad [who is a pimp],” is whether that woman was a prostitute. Generally speaking, pimps don’t really have non-prostitutes on their staff.
↵So if Dolphins GM Jeff Ireland really followed with “Your mom was a prostitute?” he can be forgiven for misunderstanding the context provided by Dez there. And ultimately, Bryant’s the one who comes off looking bad here, especially after painting himself as a martyr of an interview process run amok.
↵This story’s seen rampant speculation from all sides, moralizing from columnists and NFL analysts alike, and still, a good bit of mystery. But if the interview really went down as Trotter reported it, it may be time we all dial back the outrage toward the Dolphins and Jeff Ireland.
