Crew chiefs Chad Knaus and Alan Gustafson aren’t going anywhere.
Hendrick Motorsports Crew Chiefs Chad Knaus, Alan Gustafson Sign Extensions
Knaus and Gustafson have both signed multiyear contract extensions to remain at Hendrick Motorsports, where Knaus is the crew chief for the No. 48 team and Gustafson heads up the No. 5.
Knaus said he has signed a five-year extension and Gustafson added four more years to his deal.
The biggest question marks surround Gustafson, who wouldn’t say for sure if he would remain with the No. 5 when Kasey Kahne arrived in 2011.
He said repeatedly he would crew chief wherever Rick Hendrick assigned him, saying “I love Hendrick Motorsports more than I love crew chiefing.”
While Gustafson wasn’t sure what team he would crew chief for, Knaus will almost certainly stay with the 48 for the remainder of his deal.
“I’ve spent the majority of my life at Hendrick Motorsports and I have a hard time thinking I’d ever go somewhere else,” he said.
Knaus said he didn’t speak to anyone else or talk about any other options: His sole focus was staying with Hendrick.
He said he may step aside as a crew chief after his contract expires at the end of 2015.
