↵In the bottom of the first inning, Heyward - batting seventh - faced Carlos Zambrano with two on and took a low-inside fastball deep over the right field fence for a three-run homer. The blast immediately sent the Atlanta broadcast into vocal theatrics, but given the display, it’s hard to blame them. This was like Rick Ankiel going deep in his debut as an outfielder, only with the promise of much more to come.
↵Slightly diminishing the feat is the fact that Zambrano wound up getting pulled after allowing eight runs in 1.1 innings. Heyward wasn’t the only Brave to hit him around. Still, by going deep in the first Major League at bat of his career, Heyward joins some hallowed company, including Jordan Schafer, John Hester, Marlon Anderson, and reliever Mark Worrell. If you’re a Braves fan, you gotta like those odds.
