Since Bill Simmons is now writing about the “new” hip and trendy baseball statistics that make up the “sabermetrics movement,” I guess they’ve officially gone mainstream. So let’s talk about one of the more confusing ones: Ultimate Zone Ratings, or UZR.

↵FanGraphs defines UZR as “The number of runs above or below average a fielder is in both range runs and error runs combined.” (Hey, speaking of FanGraphs ...)
↵So, using UZR, we can learn that in 2009, the Mariners’ Franklin Gutierrez was the top center fielder, with a 29.1 UZR.
