The music laid under the highlight reels ESPN’s running from Augusta smacks loudly of the Terminator 2 theme, and it’s only appropriate. Tiger Woods came out and basically didn’t miss a beat, shooting eagles and coolly tipping his cap to the crowds. He recorded the lowest first-round score (68) in his Masters career, by two strokes. That 68 puts him 4-under and in a tie for seventh, behind the five-way scrum of Tom Watson, Lee Westwood, Phil Mickelson, Y.E. Yang, and K.J. Choi at 5-under.
2010 Masters Tournament First-Round Recap: Couples Leads, Tiger Chasing
Fred Couples at 6-under retains his one-stroke lead, and at 50 is the oldest golfer to hold an outright lead at Augusta. He’s not the only relative graybeard to put on a show in day one: 60-year-old Tom Watson’s 67 is his lowest round score at the Masters since 1990.
