The Brewers have scheduled a press conference for 3 pm Central time Thursday to announce a contract extension with their ace starting pitcher, Yovani Gallardo.
Brewers Preparing To Announce Contract Extension for Yovani Gallardo
In four seasons as a Brewer, the 24 year old Gallardo is 22-18 with a 3.58 ERA in 55 games (52 starts). He missed most of the 2008 season after undergoing surgery to repair a torn ACL, but was clearly the Brewers’ best pitcher last season, posting a 3.73 ERA in 185.2 innings and becoming just the fourth Brewer ever to record 200 strikeouts. He picked up the loss on Opening Day but pitched relatively well, allowing three earned runs on seven hits in seven innings.
Details on the contract will be released at the press conference, but expect the deal to cover at least four seasons: Gallardo would be arbitration-eligible for the first time following the 2010 season, and the Brewers would likely want to buy out at least one of his free agent seasons as part of any deal.
The Brewers are off Thursday, and Gallardo is expected to pitch next against the Cardinals on Saturday.
