England’s Race for Fourth: Tottenham Clinches Top Four Finish

A late goal from Peter Crouch gave Tottenham Hotspur a 1-0 win at Eastlands on Wednesday and made club history, ensuring Spurs’ first top four finish in the Premier League era.

Manchester City was the last team that could have usurped Harry Redknapp’s side, but with the win Spurs move four points above City, relegating the Citizens to Europa League with one match left in the season.

Tottenham Hotspur rewrote history two weeks ago with wins over Arsenal and Chelsea - traditional rivals against whom they’ve amassed a terrible record in the Premier League era.

Today at Eastlands, they will have recent history on their side when they face Manchester City, the winner taking control of fourth place (and the final UEFA Champions League spot) in England.

Tottenham Hotspur continues to lead England’s race for fourth place, defeating Bolton 1-0 at White Hart Lane while Manchester City overcame an early John Carew goal to down fellow fourth place contenders Aston Villa, 3-1 at Eastlands.

Carew put the Villans up in the 16th minute when a Stewart Downing ball found him in the penalty area, fifteen yards high to the left of goal, his run having beaten poorly trailing defender Kolo Touré. The big Norweigan quickly turned on the ball and put his shot under emergency goalkeeper Martin Fulop, putting Villa up.
