Last Friday, shortstop Yuniesky Betancourt dropped a pop up in a loss to the Rangers. The error allowed a run to score, a run that stood up as the winning run in a 4-1 game. Betancourt’s penalty for the mistake? Not just the error by his name. Not just the embarrassment of screwing up in front of tens of thousands of people. Betancourt also got fined.
The Royals Are Serious Business
↵↵Royals shortstop Yuniesky Betancourt is sporting a lighter wallet as punishment for dropping a routine pop-up through a sloppy technique in Friday’s 4-1 loss to the Texas Rangers.
↵↵The reason for the fine is that Betancourt committed the error while trying to make the catch one-handed below his head. It’s his own particular style, but it’s not the way players are instructed to catch, and while manager Trey Hillman allows his players to play how they want, he says he’ll punish them when they screw up while using an unconventional technique.
↵It’s Betancourt’s second team in a row with a similar policy. When Betancourt disappointed while playing with his own style before, his punishment in Seattle was getting traded to the Royals.
