Giant Weird Financial Convention Cancels Roy Halladay’s Awesome Return To Toronto

The Blue Jays are scheduled to play a home series against the Phillies the weekend of June 25-27. That’s still going to happen. It’s just going to take place in Philadelphia is all, because of some big powerful get-together of really rich people.

↵↵The Blue Jays’ home schedule got a little thinner on Tuesday. Due to security and congestion concerns over the upcoming G20 Summit in Toronto, the Blue Jays have moved a three-game series against the Phillies scheduled for next month to Philadelphia.

↵On June 26-27, many of the world’s financial and political leaders will convene in downtown Toronto at the Metro Convention Center -- just steps away from the Blue Jays’ home at Rogers Centre.

↵↵Google tells me that the G20 Summit is kind of a bigger deal than Roy Halladay, and given the proximity of the two events, moving the baseball series makes sense. It’s just one of those things you’d wish they would’ve figured out sooner so that it didn’t have to come to this.

↵Ultimately, it’s not a huge deal - playing three games in Philly instead of Toronto gives the Phillies a little edge, but the Jays still get the DH and last at bat. And besides, the Jays are long shots for the playoffs, while the Phillies only get a tiny boost. What’s really significant is that a Toronto organization that’s seen some miserable attendance will miss out on the guaranteed revenue from Halladay coming back to the city. Also significant is that, with the Jays still at home on a technicality, fans in Philly will have a legitimate reason to boo their own team.
