Division III Hoopster Makes a Name For Himself With Entry in NBA Draft

From the day the initial NBA draft early entry list was announced, people -- including me -- have been scrutinizing it for who should return and who should go to the league. One name that inspired little serious discussion but quite a few puzzled looks was John Sloan of Huntingdon College, a Division III school.↵↵The Sand Mountain Reporter has the story on the latest guy who thought it’d be funny to get his 15 minutes by entering his name into the draft.↵
↵↵⇥“My phone is about to explode … text messages, calls. I went and played golf today (Thursday), and I think I was on the phone more than I played golf,” Sloan said. ↵⇥↵⇥“I did a radio interview on the ninth tee box. I told the guy, ‘I’m really playing, but I can stop,’ and he was like, ‘That’s perfect.’”↵⇥
↵↵↵Nevertheless, Sloan generated a lot of attention from both local and national media. Evidently the sports information department had their fill of answering John Sloan calls, because they put up a statement on their site that all questions should go directly to Sloan.↵
↵↵So should your favorite NBA team bring Sloan in for a workout? Perhaps he’s the next great undrafted find in the league. Well, maybe not. He averaged a mere 2 points in 10.1 minutes per game as a junior and he plans on returning to school next season, but not for basketball:↵
↵↵⇥“I’m not playing next year,” Sloan said. “I’m going to get a job and work and try to get into pharmacy school, just keep my grades up and stuff.”↵↵↵Another NBA dream deferred because of the bright lights of the pharmacological industry.↵
