Fantasy Baseball: Monday’s Roto Roundup

It was a light schedule in MLB on Monday, but there was plenty of news highlighted by some injury news.

Brewers outfielder Ryan Braun was hit in his left elbow with an inside fastball from Tommy Hanson. I watched some of this game, mostly during commercials during the Canadiens-Penguins game 6, and saw Braun get hit, and he was in obvious pain at first base, but stayed in the game. He eventually came out of the game after the Braves took a 7-0 lead.

Braves outfielder Jason Heyward should be back in action on Tuesday vs the Brewers. Monday's 8-run outburst could be the start of something for the Braves struggling offense. I wonder if Heyward will stay healthy enough to avoid the DL this season. i own him in one of my two keeper leagues.

Braves starting pitcher Jair Jurrjens felt a pop in his injured hamstring when running on Monday and could be out alot longer, pending Tuesday's MRI. Kris Medlen will fill in for Jurrjens should he be out much longer.

Rockies closer Huston Street is on a schedule where he could be back closing for the Rockies in the next two weeks. He will pitch at AA Tulsa on Thursday and Saturday. Manny Corpas will be filling in for Street, so there is no reason to rush Street in my opinion.

Yankees first baseman Mark Teixiera hit another HR, his 4th in the last 3 games, and is now hitting .202-.336-.403 on the season. Will he hit .300 in 2010?

It appears that the AL is not helping Red Sox outfielder Jeremy Hermida hit much better. Hermida is hitting just .247-.313-.466 on the season. He has struck out 21 times in 73 at bats this season. Another top prospect not meeting the lofty expectations bestowed upon him.

Recently called up SS Starlin Castro went 0-2 with 2 walks, raising his OBP to .375 batting out of the 8-spot in theCubs lineup. He also made 3 errors at shortstop, two of which came on throws. He has 4 errors in his first 4 games with the big league club.

Mike Stanton Watch-Stanton hit his 15th HR of the season on Monday night at AA Jacksonville. He struck out once and walked twice. Meanwhile, the Marlins outfield went a combined 3-11 with 2 runs scored, one RBI and 3 SBs.Chris Coghlan had one of the two extra base hits the Marlins had on Monday night.

I was looking at some hitting stats on Monday during lunch, and was shocked to see that Mets third baseman David Wright had struck out more than Diamondbacks third baseman Mark Reynolds, going into Mionday's games. Wright had struck out 41 times, while Reynolds had struck out 40 times. My how times have changed.

I was surprised to see that Pirates outfielder Andrew McCutchen was the only hitter in the Pirates lineup with a SLG over .500 on Monday night. Garret Jones' SLG sits at .398, while Ryan Doumit's sits at .434. Pedro Alvarez's callup can't come soon enough for Pirates fans.

Dodgers outfielder Matt Kemp was thrown out stealing second base on Sunday. It was hit 7th caught stealing of the season, and fantasy owners are probably worried that manager Joe Torre may limit his SB chances going forward. What the boxscores don't tell you is Kemp stole second base on a pitchout, but slid past the base and was tagged out. Sure, its a CS in the boxscore, but Kemp should continue to run going forward.

Brewers third baseman Casey McGehee hit his 7th HR of the season , and now has 30 RBIs to go along with his .310-.388-.560 slash line. So much for 2009 being a fluke for McGehee.
