Talking Charlie Davies, Bob Bradley and nincompoops

Charlie Davies ... much ado about, essentially, an injured player. Every nation has them heading into South Africa.

I am surprised (and yet not really surprised) by the number of people ready to fling ninja throwing stars at Bob Bradley over this Charlie Davies matter. If you want the full version of my thoughts check out the SI.com piece this morning on the Bradley-Davies debate.

The short version is this: Soccer is a tough game to play the right way. The World Cup is an intensely demanding event. Seven months ago Charlie Davies was a mangled mess of a human being, physically. He just wasn’t ready. His World Cup hopes, sadly, were extinguished the night he busted curfew and got on the road as thoughtlessly as the others in the car that night.

That’s about it. And yet, there are way too many people out there who just can’t see this for what it is: Davies is just like any other player who has suffered an injury and won’t be able to participate in the World Cup. I know a couple of others. Maybe you’ve heard of this one.

Hate on Bob Bradley if you want for his managerial style, his lineup selections … heck, for his choice of sideline attire. He’s a big boy; he understands that criticism goes hand-in-hand with the coaching whistle. But to suggest there was some other motive for not including Davies is nonsense, the very pinnacle of nincompoopery.
