Ken Burns’ Baseball is not just the greatest documentary series about the game of all time, it’s among the best documentary series on any topic. It was therefore with great joy that I read the news today, confirming that Burns will be updating his saga with a two-part add-on, entitle The Tenth Inning, due to be broadcast on PBS on September 28 + 29 this year.
Ken Burns Goes Extra Innings For “Baseball”
↵In it, he will cover everything that has happened to the game since the original series came out in 1994. I must admit, however, to some concern. After all, in contrast to the “golden ages” to which the original series looked back, what has baseball given us since 1994? The first things that come to mind are a very nasty strike, an explosion in player salaries and a lot of offensive records, which many fans tag with a mental *.
↵Expect to see a good chunk on the 2004 World Series win by his beloved Red Sox. “I admit we would not be doing this had they not won,” Burns says. The 2001 Series, and the healing effect baseball had after 9/11, is bound also to be covered. Still, if anyone can find the golden heart of the game, it’s Burns, and you could do a lot worse than catching up with the original between now and September.
