‘We Want Wade’: Miami Courting Free Agent Dwyane Wade, Web 2.0-Style

After the Miami Heat’s season ended a couple weeks ago, the collective focus of the franchise and its supporters switched to the impending free agency of their superstar, Dwayne Wade. So today, despite still being over six weeks away from the start of free agency, the organization took their first tangible step in pursuit of a new contract. The team launched a new site, We Want Wade, that acts as a guidebook for how fans should get involved in Wade’s recruitment.

↵The site offers a number of techniques you can use to help woo Wade that gracefully toe the line between passionate fandom and what might be considered criminal stalking under any other circumstances. For example, if you see Wade on the street, you can yell, “We Want Wade” at him.

↵Or, if he is seated near you at a restaurant, you should buy him dessert. Which makes sense because he is going to sign for somewhere north of $100 million this summer, while I’m in my early 20’s and still eating Ramen noodles somewhere between four and six times a week; don’t worry big guy, the flan is on me.

↵Wade’s reaction to the website?

↵↵“I thought it was hilarious,” Wade said

↵↵Ouch. Not thoughtful, or touching, or inspiring, but hilarious. And it is kind of funny. I’d been under the impression that Miami’s best chance at retaining Wade was finding him another marquee player to run with. Turns out it’s a lifetime of free desserts. Who knew?
