Bud Selig appears to be rejecting calls to move the 2011 All-Star Game from Arizona. Speaking at a news conference on Thursday morning, he said:
Selig: 2011 All-Star Game Stays In Arizona
↵↵“Apparently all the people around and in minority communities think we’re doing OK. That’s the issue, and that’s the answer. I told the clubs today: ‘Be proud of what we’ve done.’ They are. We should. And that’s our answer. We control our own fate, and we’ve done very well.”
↵↵As reported here previously, there had been calls for the game to be pulled, following passage of a controversial immigration law in Arizona. However, Selig appears to have little intention of doing so. It’ll be interesting to see whether the likes of Adrian Gonzalez, who stated earlier this month, “If they leave it up to the players and the law is still there, I’ll probably not play in the All-Star Game.” Will others follow his suit?
↵I’ve a feeling it’s an issue that won’t go away quickly, with the MLB Players’ Association coming out against the law as a whole, saying ominously, “If the current law goes into effect, the MLBPA will consider additional steps necessary to protect the rights and interests of our members.”
