Some surprising news from the UFC’s sister MMA promotion, the WEC. Popular cage announcer Joe Martinez last night broke word that he and the company have parted ways “due to a family reason that couldn’t be compromised.”
WEC And Cage Announcer Joe Martinez Part Ways
↵Martinez also works as the announcer for Golden Boy Promotions’ Spanish boxing telecast “Solo Boxeo Tecate.” And apparently there was a bit of a conflict of interest with that job and his WEC duties.
↵Joe spoke to MMADieHards.com about the news:
↵↵“I regret that what has been a great relationship is coming to an end. Unfortunately, the best decision for my family at this time is to keep my commitment to Golden Boy. I was more than willing to work around the possible conflicts, but another main factor was my work within other areas of combat sports. While I do not feel my association with a Spanish-language boxing production has any crossover, it appears to have been a big issue.”
↵↵Clearly Martinez isn’t happy that he is leaving the WEC, and quite frankly, neither are most fans. Martinez did a great job on the mic as the WEC grew over the years to become the top-flight promotion it is today.
↵No word on who will be tapped as his replacement, though conventional wisdom would point to UFC announcer Bruce Buffer taking over all of Zuffa’s MMA announcing duties.
