Dodgers Go For Ten Consecutive Wins

The Los Angeles Dodgers go for their tenth straight victory tonight, at home against San Diego, though they’ll have to go through Jon Garland and his 1.88 ERA to do so. However, it is already a streak tied for the eight-best posted by the team since they moved to California. True Blue LA has a nice piece looking at previous double-digit Dodger dalliances

While LA has been scoring a decent amount of runs over that time - 5.6 per game - that’s skewed by the thirteen in one Arizonan night. Otherwise, they haven’t exactly been hitting the ball amazingly well, the Dodgers batting a fairly mediocre .258 during the streak. They have been getting a good number of walks, but it has been their pitching that has won them the games.

The pitching staff have conceded on average only two runs per game, and never more than three while the streak has been in progress. That has allowed them to prevail in match-ups against the staff aces of several divisional rivals during the run - Ubaldo Jimenez, Dan Haren and Garland - and has pulled them from six back and floundering to having a shot at a tie for the NL West lead, should they win and the Giants lose in Arizona.

If they can get to the weekend undefeated, then things get really interesting, as the Dodgers would start to get into much more rarefied territory. Only three NL teams have won more than a dozen straight since 1992. The ‘99 Padres posted 14 W’s in a row, while the ‘00 Braves and ‘02 Giants each took 15 straight victories.
