Star Minnesota Twins catcher Joe Mauer may be out of commission for a while. The 27-year-old reigning MVP suffered a bone bruise in his heel on Friday, and the injury apparently has yet to heal satisfactorily. Manager Ron Gardenhire was adamant, though, that a trip to the disabled list was not in the works:
Joe Mauer Could Miss Week With Bruised Heel
Asked on his weekly radio show (KSTP AM-1500) if Mauer’s injury was more of a week-to-week thing than a day-to-day thing, Gardenhire said yes. Asked later, in his pregame session with the team’s beat writers, if Mauer might be a DL situation, Gardenhire said, “No, not at all. It’s a situation where if you try to get him out there too quick, then this thing will never heal. We just don’t want that to be the case. You’ve got to give this a couple extra days here, so that’s why we brought in another catcher.”
Gardenhire said Mauer tried putting on his spikes early in Saturday’s game, “and he just can’t walk.”
Adjust fantasy rosters accordingly. While Mauer isn't bound for the DL at this point, the Twins are going to need a replacement behind the plate; to that end, Minnesota placed reliever Pat Neshek on the 15-day DL and called up Wilson Ramos from their AAA affiliate in Rochester. Ramos' scouting report indicates that he does not have manly sideburns like Mauer; this lack of virility may hurt his production in the major leagues. DEVELOPING...
