Derrick Caracter Has His Backup Plan to the NBA: the Navy

↵↵When UTEP made the NCAA Tournament this season, there was a lot written about the changes Derrick Caracter had undergone as a player and a person. He was highly touted before he was even in ninth grade and when he didn’t pan out at Louisville and went to UTEP, he was deemed a bust by many. While he hasn’t been what many people expected, it was a nice ending to see him make the Big Dance. ↵
↵↵Caracter remains on NBA radars in that second round-to-undrafted range. He’s in Chicago trying to put his best foot forward for potential teams at the draft combine this week, too. But if that doesn’t work out, HoopsHype has the scoop on what Caracter could do next:↵
↵↵⇥ “If Plan A doesn’t work out, Plan B would be joining the Navy. I would do something like that. Seriously. I think it would be a great experience. You travel, you train, you can be chillin’ in Japan. You get to see different things and different parts of the world. That’s something I always wanted to do: travel around the world. See different things, new people, cultures and lifestyles.”↵↵↵The emphasis is mine on the “chillin’ in Japan” part of things. While I don’t have any sort of military background, I’m going to say that there will not be as much chillin’ as Caracter would hope. If he wants to see the world and try new cultures, how about a middle ground: If/when the NBA doesn’t work out, how about going to play overseas to scratch that exploration itch? Baby steps, Mr. Caracter.↵
