Irish Soccer Player Had ‘3.6 Litres Of Blood In His Abdomen’

Want to hear something horrific and gruesome? No? Too bad. Shane Duffy, an 18-year-old Irish centre-back, was injured Friday after colliding with a goalkeeper during practice. And by “injured,” we mean “lacerated his liver and almost died”:

↵↵The 18-year-old Everton player, who had life-saving surgery after lacerating his liver, lost 3.6 litres of blood, around two-thirds of his supply.

↵However, he has made good progress and moved out of intensive care on Sunday.

↵“Shane was very frightened. He thought he as going to die,” said the Republic’s team doctor Alan Byrne.

↵↵Holy. Red. Hell. That’s it. That’s all we can add to this story. Instead of providing additional commentary, we are strapping pillows to ourselves and never leaving the house.
