↵I’m fighting safe. Every time I step into the octagon, my life is in jeopardy. For me, it’s more important to not get hit than to hit the guy. I will never fight in a way [in which] I fight like I flip a coin... I never took risks. The only fight I took a risk was when I fought Matt Serra, and I went in a stupid exchange, and it was not smart. I got caught; Serra beat me fair and square, and he deserved the victory that night. But it taught me a good lesson, and I don’t want it to happen again.
Georges St. Pierre Admits To Fighting Safe
↵This has already led to a segment of fans going ahead and calling GSP a coward for saying that his goal is entirely not to “mix it up” and that he bases his style around not getting hit. Of course, every fighter in sports with long term success and health has based that success on fighting smart and safe. Floyd Mayweather Jr. isn’t a superstar making a ton of money because he’s out there getting in firefights. He’s playing the game in a smart way and it’s working out very much to Georges advantage.
