KU’s Ticket Scandal: ‘I Got On The MARTA With $200,000 In Each Pocket’

Kansas University basketball is one of the hardest tickets to get in the entire country. Normal folks interpret that as a testament to their fan support. Crooked officials and shady alumni however, see it as an opportunity.

A team of investigative reporters at Yahoo! Sports have uncovered a ticket scalping ring that focused on Kansas University postseason basketball in 2002-2003. The group was made up of Roger Morningstar (a former Kansas basketball player and father of current Jayhawk Brady Morningstar), Rodney Jones (a former KU ticket director), Dave Freeman (a prominent Lawrence-area developer) and David and Dana Pump (two of the biggest power brokers in college basketball).

It began when the Pump brothers told Roger Morningstar that if he could get his hands on extra Kansas basketball tickets, they could turn them into a sizeable profit. Morningstar then used Freeman to get a hold of Jones, who took the tickets directly from his office. This isn’t stand-on-the-corner small time scalping either; we’re talking big time volume here:.

“There was a ton of them,” Freeman said of the tickets. “We made a half-million dollars [that weekend]. I got on the MARTA with $200,000 in each pocket. It was all in one-hundred dollar bills. Every $10,000 had a paper clip and they were rolled up.

Wowza, that is a lot of money to have on your person when taking public transportation. No word yet on how the University will respond, or the size of the smack down the NCAA will inevitably lay down on them.

Check out the full report; it’s worth reading.
