Sometimes I hate to be right. I mean that sincerely. I truly wanted to be wrong about this one.
Terrible news for women’s soccer: St. Louis Athletica folds

I put together a piece more than a year ago about WPS and a very tough slog ahead. The bottom line: I want the league to work. I hope the league will work. But I really have my doubts. Always did.
All the reasons why are in that piece.
Today, we get the news that St. Louis Athletica will shut its doors. It’s terrible news for the women’s league, which is left with seven teams. Remember, the L.A. Sol shuttered during the winter.
Meanwhile, owner Jeff Cooper continues to work on securing the future of St. Louis AC, a member of the USSF D-2 Pro League. (Cooper’s group controls both teams.) That doesn’t look good either for
For WPS, I just fear the log is rolling downhill. I hope the spiral can be arrested, but this was always going to be a bit of a long shot. The odds got a little longer still today.
