France will host their first major tournament since the 1998 World Cup and their first European Championships since 1984, having been awarded Euro 2016 in Friday’s vote.

The hosts of the 1998 World Cup beat out Turkey and Italy for the honor. Italy was eliminated in the first round of voting, while Turkey lost out by one vote on the ultimate ballot.
